Education class- week one

September 15, 2009

I did not know what to expect on my first day of education class. I took an education class before, however, it was more geared to students who wanted to be teachers in the elementary school setting. I always knew I wanted to be a teacher, especially at the high school level, so I was excited to take a class that was focused around my major. Before coming to this class, I knew that people were different, however, when I heard my teacher recite his”I am” poem, I gained a new perspective. I never had a teacher open up to a class like Professor Meacham did. I was impressed by his style of poetry and his talent for writing. I was always one of those students that looked up to the teachers who did that assignments as well. For example, I had a Field Hockey coach who did not just solely tell us to do sprints, she instead ran the sprints with us, and told us that if she beat any of us in the race, we would all do them again. This made my teammates and I take the running more seriously, and as a result got more out of the project. I think the majority of the students in the class took the assignment more seriously once Professor Meacham recited his poem. Once we heard how good his was, we didn’t want to be embarrassed by not putting a hundred percent into ours. For me, writing the poem was not as hard. Fortunately, I know what kind of person I am, and who I want to be. It was trying to make my poem make sense and flow which was the hard part. I had many ideas for direction, and I’m happy with the way mine turned out, as well as my fellow classmates. I guess it’s true that you cannot judge a book by its cover. So many of my classmates proved that stereotypes are never right, and that an individual cannot be defined with one word such as a brain, an athlete,a basket case, a princess, or a criminal. I felt like it was something out of the movie “The Breakfast Club,” and I particularly liked the atmosphere that was created in the central park cafe. I was amazed in how many people opened up, and let us take a look inside to the type of people they are. I suggest that the assignment be kept in Edu419. It gives the teacher the opportunity to see what type of students he is working with, as well as gives the students the incentive for self-discovery. I look forward to more assignments like this in Edu419, and like a previous student warned me, I truly see how I will get a lot out of this class.
